i'm not sure how i feel after reading the "Two Ways" article. In some of the pictures i was a bit shocked by what i saw, and in other i don't think i would've thought anything if i had run a crossed them in a magazine or billboard. i know women are exploited for the purposes of advertising. i think some of the ads that were shown in the article were taken out of context, and the ads that were a bit more shocking were trying to be shocking. with that said i don't think some of the shocking images should be used as ads because they desensitize us to the horrors of rape and discrimination towards women.
ReplyDeletei found the article "Appearances" far more disturbing. i think it's unfair not only to attack people in the gay and lesbian but i think it's also wrong to stereo type people and attack people purely on their physical appearance. after reading this article it makes me feel like anybody can be attacked simply by mistaken sexuality.
1. I thought the “Two Ways a Woman Can get Hurt” article was very forward, but very interesting. I never really sat and thought with depth on how much Sex is in advertising. It was disturbing to see how much rape and violence are suggested in advertisements. The surprising thing is that most of the things that are being advertised this way are meant to sell things to women themselves, like panties or perfume. This makes me think of how women think themselves in society. Men obviously see women as objects rather than humans, but seeing how most of these sexually themed advertisements are directed towards women, it makes me wonder if women see themselves as objects meant to please men.
ReplyDelete2. The section that struck me the most in the “Appearances” article was when the author tells the story of the man on the bus and the man dancing in the club, and how they both got beaten for supposedly being homosexuals when in reality they were straight. It is wrong to beat up any person for any reason, but it’s disturbing to know that people assume things and punish people for their sexual orientation.

ReplyDelete1. The "Two Ways" article is mainly about how the theme of sex is increasing in everyday advertising. This is used by companies to intice potential customers to buy their products. The problem with this is that virtually above 50% of all advertising is now sexually orientated. This, to me, is ruining society by the lack of censorship in public. Now kids are exposed to this advertising which makes them want to buy these items and hence, turn them to materialistic children. Therefore, the negative consequences to sex advertising is not only the economy, but also the children getting exposed to vulgar ad's at such a tender age.
ReplyDelete2. Theres not a particular section that struck me but the whole thing. As the two people above said, it's wrong to abuse those people in any way. Being homosexual should not be discriminated upon. When those two straight people got beaten up by mistake, it just shows the carelessness and stupidity in our society today.
1. I really enjoyed reading "Two Ways A Woman Can Get Hurt". It's really applicable to society even today. It made me think about and realize how much sex sells in the media and advertising. Working on our presentation made my group go in depth with this unit and it's insane how much is censored and not publicized because ads get so out of hand and degrading for women. I hate this about society today but it's the sad truth. It makes me wonder if we didn't use sex appeal in ad's if the products would sell as successfully, I mean we all know that Audrina Patridge doesn't come with the teriyaki burger at Carls Junior and that women don't chase men down because they shower with Axe Gel, yet we buy their products. Just a thought.
ReplyDelete2. The "Appearances" article was much more harsh to read. It saddens me that people cannot leave differences aside. Everyone disagrees with a lot of the things in this world, but why can't we just drop it and get over our ever changing society. I think there will always be new things that people have to accept. The section in this article that struck me the most had to be the beatings Tom and Jan suffered. Ugh it frustrates me that people can't just let differences be, we are all human, why can't people realize.
1. Jean Kilbourne’s “Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt” article had many interesting reasons why advertisement may lead to rape and violence. Many of the advertisement examples were either sexual or were pictures that had men overpowering girls. For example, there was one with a guy pointing a gun at a woman. These pictures seem a little old but I think that society these days still have similar types of advertisement.
ReplyDelete2. The section in “Appearances” that surprised me the most was when they guy that dressed homosexual and went to that club got stabbed in the neck just for dressing the way he did. I don’t understand why homophobic people would just stab some random person he doesn’t know just because he dressed like a homosexual.
1)When I read "Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt" by Jean Kilbourne, it really stood up to me. I never realized that these advertisements had to do with sex and violence. In conclusion, this tells me that sex sells.
ReplyDelete2)In "Appearances", I found it to be more shocking and disturbing. People shouldn't judge one's that are homosexual. They have their rights to be treated normally.
1. When I read "two ways" I had mixed feelings about the message she was trying to portray. I understand that advertising agencies use sex and the objectification of women to sell their ads but in the same sense if they weren't using sex to do so they would find another outrageous way to market their products. All in all its a vicious cycle, while we may be uncomfortable with these ads they will continue to exist because it is the general nature of our society to push the envelope. I have yet to take a clear stance on this article.
ReplyDelete2. Like my classmates I found "apearances" to be a much more upsetting article than "two ways". It is very upsetting to know that people can commit violent crimes on another person based on their orientation. It is unfortunate that this world is taking such a long time to become accepting of those who are different from us.
1. Reading "Two Ways" I wasn't too shocked by what it was telling me. This are things that are reality sadly, and I already knew that. The media uses sex to sell everything, some things more settle than others. In almost any magazine you pick uses women to sell clothes, perfume, makeup, cigarettes, alcohol, etc.
ReplyDelete2. The article "Appearance" did affect me a little bit more though. I am someone who is a great supporter of gay rights and equality. It made me very sad to read this article. I can't believe that someone could stab and kill or try to kill someone just because of their race, sexual orentation, etc. I was want to know what that person is thinking to push him to commit that outrageous act.
1. In "Two Ways" I thought the author was reading way too much into certain advertisements, looking for or finding stuff that really isn't there. Although I do agree that many advertisers cross the line when trying to sell a product, always justifying it with "sex sells" without really thinking what damages it may cause.
ReplyDelete2. What shocked me in "Appearances" was pretty much every case in where people were being attacked just because they look homosexual. I didn't even know such cases existed. It's pretty upsetting to know that those kind of things are still happening today, especially the part where people were being asked "Why the homophobia?" "Because they acted like the opposite sex." I cant believe such ignorance still goes on today.
