Read LOP 14-18. Then, take some time to think carefully about the following two questions. When you are ready, write your responses here:

1) What type of person does Pi seem to be so far? How would you describe him?
2) Pi seems equally drawn to three major religions: Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity. His explanations of WHY he is drawn to each religion go against many of our preconceptions and biases regarding these three faiths. Choose one of his explanations that interests/appeals to you and explain what you find striking in it and why. (Note: I am not asking you which religion you're interested in. I'm asking you which of his explanations of his *own, personal attraction* to a particular faith interest you and why.)

Due: Before our next class meeting

  1. i feel as though pi is a very open minded person who takes all people's beliefs in mind. at the same time it seems like pi in his youth whiles tring to find his own identity took on the beliefs and interests of the people he respects. i guess i still have some more reading to do before we find out.

  2. Pi seems to be a very open minded person. I thought his reaction was interesting when it was being explained to him about Jesus and the reasons for his death, the way he couldn't believe that He died for our sins.

  3. To me Pi seems to be down to earth and also a very open minded person.
the religion that is most striking to me is
muslim because that religion seems to be about anything BUT love(pulling from references out of the text)

  4. Pi seems to be someone who is very intrigued by diversity and the thoughts of other people/organizations.He seems to be very philosophical for his age and as others have noted open minded. I found that his initial thought of Islam was amusing. He notes that he sees it as merely hot weather yoga.He seems to take all of the religions lighter than the teachers would like him to in the beginning when he begins following all of them.

  5. To me Pi sounds very curious and very eager to learn about different religions. Every time he met someone of a different religion, he took the time to learn from them. To me the most interesting reaction he had was to Christianity, instead of love and forgiveness, he thought it was about violence because of Jesus on the cross.

  6. I personally think that Pi is very judgemental. One of his explanation that stood out to me was when Pi compares Christianity with his own religion, Hinduism. "Christianity is a religion in a rush...If Hinduism flows placidly like the Ganges, then Christianity bustles like Toronto at rush hour." I think Pi might think that Hinduism is better than Christianity.

  7. Pi appears to be an innocent curious individual. He enjoys knowledge and intellectual theories. He seems to appear just as normal as any child and certainly acts as one too.

Pi states," Catholics have a reputation for severity, for judgement that comes down heavily." I though this point was very strong in that indeed being catholic one undergoes strong judgements and its clear that no matter the situation is its all looked down upon on.

  8. Pi seems to be a very inquisitive person who is very open minded yet holds on to many past beliefs. While he grew up as a Hindu, he tries to understand how other religions and beliefs work as he discusses his encounter with Christianity and Muslim. It seems that although he may be stubborn at times, he likes to learn about different things and be exposed to new ideals. I like how he says that although he believes in Hinduism, Christianity and Muslim, he likes to act with love while seeing the world through a Hindu's eyes. This means to me that while he is open minded to all ideas and he likes to act according to certain aspects of each religion, he chooses to see the world as he learned while he was growing up. This seems like it can be interpreted as seeing the new world with old eyes while trying to acquire his own sense of direction.

  9. 1.Pi seems to be a curious young person that knows about animals and is also interested about different religions in these past few chapters.
2.The way Pi explains Christianity was appealing to me because of all the examples he gave throughout chapter 17. When Pi says that Christians, “had a bad reputation for few gods and great violence” (64), it made me think about the history that Christians went through, and what violence that this religion had. Pi and the priest’s conversation about the stories from the bible were interesting. After each example Pi shares with the priest, he would always say it was because of, “love” and each descriptive examples of Jesus that Pi interpreted during each story that he told was also interesting.

  10. To me Pi seems like somebody who is very eager to learn, and lively. It appears he is always in a search to find a deeper meaning in his life and openly accepts different religions. Its almost as if he takes bits and pieces of many religions and incorporates them into his life. I thought it was interesting how he thought at first it was kinda strange that Jesus was crucified. I just think thats a compelling response to christianity. I never looked at it like that.

  11. Pi seems to be a very easily influenced person. You can see this personality trait through his discoveries of religion. He is easily manipulated by people around him, sort of as if he has a very childlike mindset, the innocent type where they believe everything. I would describe him as a kind calm person who is always seeking to understand to expand his intelligence. I would have to say his perception of Jesus was awkward. He speaks very much about love and crucification. Instead of the norm we believe about God and Love. He sees it as pain and suffering, and about having tea with the priest.

  12. Pi thinks outside the box. That simple statement encompasses all of Piscine because he is made to think and see regular/common things in a different light. An example is the sloth. Pi seems so intrigued by such a average creature. What we see as a slow and useless animal, he sees it as peaceful and close with nature (almost meditating).
On religion, Pi isn't confused of what to pick, but decides to choose all 3. He likes different factors from all 3 religions such as the variety of Gods in Hinduism. The thing that striked me the most was when he said "How many nations are there in the sky?" Point being the fact that no one controls the skies but faith itself. Faith in religion, and Pi has brought a important note on multiple religions. If you like a certain parts of a religion you should be able to practice with no restrictions because no one knows the true rulers of the skies.

  13. 1) Pi is an intelligent, wise beyond his years, spiritual and worldly person.

2)I thought it was very interesting when Pi was joking about the "hairless Christians" and he stated: "Hindus in their capacity for love, are indeed hairless Christians, just as Muslims, in the way they see God in everything, are bearded Hindus, and Christians, in their devotion to God, are hat-wearing Muslims." the reason i found that interesting is that it explains how Pi relates the three different religions and how he connects them to make it possible to follow all three faithfully, he is saying that they are all similar when it comes to God, and it was interesting to me that after studying all three he still felt that way.

  14. 1.Pi is a deeply religious person who has a very calm and easy going personality . He is also intelligent and philosophical given his age. This is shown by his desire(hunger) for knowledge as seen through his observation of the animals in the zoo and later in his exploration into the various religions. Hi easy going personality allows him to be open to and eventually adopt the three religions.
    2. Pi on religion begins by saying that we are free of religion at birth and that someone introduces us to it. We remain in that religion or make a change for less (an explanation why we lose God along life’s way). But for him he goes on deeper and learns on other religions and practices all three simultaneously. He sees all religion as being similar, all have a capacity for love, all see God in everything and all have a devotion to God just by using different rites and rituals that dictate their religion. Each has aspects that he can adopt and that falls into place with all three as he explains to his foster mother Auntieji. On pg. 62 Pi gives an analogy of Krishna and the milkmaids who would party with their lord and once they started becoming possessive they end up losing the essence of God. This possessiveness is what most of religious literalists and fundamentalists suffer from. They take religion as a rite and perform rituals but lose the true essence of it all i.e. God. That is why all religions-Hinduism, Islam and Christianity cannot seem to agree with each other because they are jealous with God and cannot share him with anyone else.

  15. I think that Pi is a person that gives just about everything an equal shot. He does not turn something down just by the “sound” of it. Pi also seems to be influenced rather easily as well as he is learning different religions. Based on what the priest tells him, I don’t think that would be enough to convince me to be a Christian. I would have to say that out of the three religions, Christianity interests me the most. Is “love” the only thing that matters. So much so, that it makes you want to become a member of that faith?

  16. 1. Pi so far seems to be a very curious boy especially regarding God. He is a critical thinker therefore seems to be digesting the three religions. He make good comparisons or parabbles regarding religions.
    2. Pi seems to be interested in God rather than religion, which he sees truth in all three of the religions. He actually believes in all three of the religions. The one that intrigued me the most is his parrable about Jesus sacrificing Himself. In which Pi compared if there was a lion in the zoo that eats, kills and ravages the other animals, would his father sacrice him to the lion instead. This at first doesn't make sense to him.

  17. 1. Pi is a very religious person who is very curious about the differnt types of religion in the world. He is also very open to learning from different religions.
    2. I found Pi's explanation of Christianity very interesting. He claims this religion to be very violence oriented and not about love or forgiveness. It was interesting how Pi couldn't believe that Jesus would sacrifice himself on a cross just out of love.

  18. 1.) Pi seems to be a very open person, who learns and soaks up everything someone tells him. He is curious person who has a thirst to know more about things. For being so young, his mind seems to be at a mature level.
2.) I find the religion Hinduism the most interesting. Since it is the religion that Pi was born in, he will always have a connection with it. I like how it involves the universe and everything in it, not just one group of people of things.

  19. Pi seems to be very intrigued by a lot of simple things. He is also inspired by many of the new things that he learns and sees. He seems to accept a lot into his life, especially nature, and from the chapters, I would also say different religions. I can tell that he enjoys being and surrounded by different areas and people. I think that he is open to all aspects of all three of the religions. With god, and love, he doesnt seem to focused on the idea. It seems as if the religion is awkward towards him. But for me, I think that Christianity is a very interesting relgion since in revolves around the love of everyone, and everything. It doesn't just focus on a specific thing.

  20. To me Pi comes off as a very curious and open minded person. I like how he is open to anything and wants to learn about everything before making a dicussion on what religion he believes in. I wish more people would opening look at other people's views like Pi does, instead of instantly closing others out when they aren't part of their own religion or talk about a situation they don't agree with.

I am very much like Pi that i question the things people teach in religion. And i dont think i could pick one of those three religions thus far.

  21. I see Pi as a person with an open mind that is listens to peoples believes and ideas. I feel like he respects people that have there own ideas rather then people who choose not to have an opinion. He finds a lot of different things intresting and he makes sure to describe why he finds them intresting.
